Breaking: Slovak PM Fico in hospital after being shot

Per BBC News: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been shot and wounded, according to local media reports.


Mr Fico was shot in front of a cultural community centre in the town of Handlova, where a government meeting had been held, reports say.


Several shots were heard, according to journalists on the scene.

The Slovak leader has been taken to hospital and his alleged assailant detained by police.


Handlova is around 180km (112 miles) north-east of the capital Bratislava.

UPDATE 1: Slovakia's prime minister is in "very serious" condition after being shot. He is currently being airlifted to a hospital, according to local outlets.


UPDATE 2: Official statement on Slovakia PM Fico: "He was shot multiple times and is currently in a life-threatening condition. At this moment he's being transported by helicopter to Banská Bystrica, because it would take too long to get to Bratislava ... The next few hours will decide."
